The BISA holding their next virtual conference from 11-13 January 2027. The conference will be ‘virtually hosted’ by the Department of International Politics at City St. George’s, University of London. This conference will be in addition to the main #BISA2027 in-person conference taking place in June 2027.

To enable a broader international participation in BISA conferences, and to bring together scholars from the UK and across the globe, the conference aims to be inclusive of researchers at all career stages who, for various reasons including cost and visa rules, might find it more difficult to participate in our in-person events.

Our first virtual conference in 2025 saw around 200 attendees from 31 countries come together to share and develop their research.

Conference theme: Conflict and cooperation in a changing world

Recent years have seen profound political, social, and economic upheaval. These shifts present serious challenges as well as new opportunities. Existing institutions are transforming or failing by the wayside. At the same time, new areas of both competition and cooperation are emerging. This conference seeks new ways to understand and transcend current political realities across a wide range of perspectives and approaches. These include, but are no means limited to, changes in the international system, increasing violence, vulnerability and risk, the rise of artificial intelligence and the fast pace of technological change, enduring inequalities between the Global North and Global South, and the dangers of climate change. We invite submissions that seek to deepen our understanding of this global moment, how it has emerged, and potential futures. We aim to identify the potential for positive changes as well as pitfalls to avoid. We also seek to integrate how our teaching and research both influences and is influenced by these shifts.

With the semicentennial of the first Star Wars approaching in 2027, it is evident that few other Hollywood blockbusters enjoy such broad cultural appeal and wide academic interest as Star Wars. In the scholarly literature, however, one theme and region is conspicuously absent: China.

The proposed volume Chinese Star Wars: Vernacular Readings of a Global Multimedia Phenomenon, edited by Damian Mandzunowski (Heidelberg University) and Nick Stember (Independent Scholar), sets out to shed more light on exactly these aspects. In its five decades, Star Wars has grown from three films into a wide-ranging multimedia franchise encompassing comic books, films, games, television, animation, and other forms of cultural expression. As such, it operates via a plethora of dissemination avenues which, by and large, need to adapt to a local context. Moreover, as a space fantasy built on tropes of knights, princesses, and feudal bloodlines, and one which is largely driven by nostalgia and legacy characters, Star Wars continues to struggle to connect with audiences in places like China, where “harder” science-fiction has historically been much more popular. At the same time, a dedicated Chinese Star Wars community exists not only in the PRC, but even more so in Hong Kong and Taiwan, with fans often favoring the Prequel Trilogy and the Expanded Universe/Legends for their intricate world-building and political narratives as well as the video games for the immersive nature, while largely ignoring the Sequel Trilogy. A study of all these processes, coupled with the diverse reception, readership, recollections, and impact (or lack thereof) of Star Wars in China, is to form the core subject of this edited volume.

We invite contributions that explore the interplay between the larger Star Wars universe(s) and the Chinese (re)production, consumption, and reception of it over the decades following 1977. We particularly welcome case studies and detailed explorations of overlooked artifacts, whether material or symbolic, as well as studies based on oral history. Transcultural approaches that critically engage with Chinese Star Wars phenomena are also highly encouraged.

In particular, we welcome papers on, but by no means limited to, topics such as:

Early reception history: historical accounts of the earliest reception of Star Wars in Guangzhou (via Hong Kong and Macau) and its circulation through bootleg channels before official distribution—especially oral history contributions from this period;

Chinese dimensions of Star Wars cosplay culture: these could include ethnographic and/or sociological explorations via oral history interviews, participatory study, and other innovative methods, especially of the 501st Legion Chinese Garrison;

Collecting, memorabilia, merchandise, and Star Wars toys, either from the aspect of their prominence in China, or from the point of view of their actual manufacturing, as already the very first Kenner figures were mass-produced in China;

The Expanded Universe in China: explorations of the role and impact of 1990s/2000s Star Wars book and comics series in China;

Sociocultural analyses of the Prequels: studies that explore the reception of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy in China against the backdrop of the late 1990s sociocultural landscape;

Disney-era Star Wars: the reception of Disney-era Star Wars content, including most recent shows like Andor, and its intersections with discussions of authoritarianism in China;

Chinese web novel/web comic adaptations: analyses of official and unofficial Chinese web novel, web comic, or animated adaptations, variations, and official and unofficial expansions of the Star Wars universe;

Industry perspectives: contributions from individuals involved in the production side of Chinese Star Wars, including translators, poster artists, dubbers, and comic adapters;

Critical takes: examinations of the franchise’s reception in China, including the perceived impact (or lack thereof) of the original and sequel trilogies and discussions surrounding issues of biases within fan communities or adaptations;

The Taiwan / Hong Kong / Macau dimensions: how the reception of Star Wars differed in the larger Sinosphere, where the films received an official theatrical release;

Political readings: analyses of how political metaphors present in Star Wars (e.g., Vietnam War, Nuclear War, and Iraq War allusions from George Lucas’s original intent) have been received and interpreted within a Chinese context;

Linguistic/semiotic approaches: investigations into the challenges and strategies involved in translating Star Wars’ myriad names, languages, and technical terms into Chinese, as well as homemade translations, scanlation processes, and other aspects of the 1980s–2000s gray-zone Star Wars consumption;

IP, legal structures, and legal issues and challenges: the legal landscape of Star Wars in China, with a particular focus on bootleg and/or piracy culture, such as the smuggling and selling of pirated VHS, VCDs, or DVDs.

All other relevant topics are also welcome!

Read the full CfP in the attached PDF or here: https://chinacomx.github.io/update/CfPChineseStarWars.html

Please submit your proposal until Monday, 10 August 2026, (300 words), alongside your name, email, affiliation, and short bio (100 words), here: https://forms.gle/FwWk4cxKE3xQvZ7H8

We will inform you about acceptance by Monday, 31 August 2026; first chapter drafts are expected by Monday, 4 January 2027.

We aim for a balanced mix of academic rigor and engaging, insightful explorations of Star Wars lore “with Chinese characteristics.” Contributions should maintain an academic standard while also embracing a self-aware appreciation for the unique and often compelling nature of this transcultural phenomenon. While we are particularly keen to include papers that make use of Chinese language primary source materials, we are also open to contributions from scholars with areas of expertise outside of Chinese studies who nonetheless are interested in exploring Chinese Star Wars realms.

We intend to publish the edited volume as part of a designed publication series on the politics and practices of reading culture in China with a major academic publisher (preliminary spoken agreement reached) following a blind peer review system. We also hope to organize an online workshop and/or conference panel/roundtable with all contributors in the advanced stages of research and writing for an enhanced cohesion among the chapters.

The Modern East Asian Studies (MEAS) programme at Goethe University Frankfurt invites students interested in the programme to attend an online information session on 13 May, 12:00 (CEST). A second meeting will be held in person on 3 June, 16:00 (CEST) on Goethe University’s Westend campus (SH 0.107).

Registration for the online meeting: https://uni-frankfurt.zoom- x.de/meeting/register/dQu1P7pdRwK9aILNXa2cyw

MEAS, an international, interdisciplinary and research-oriented graduate programme, is an English-taught degree primarily designed for students who hold a BA degree in either East Asia-related humanities or the social sciences (economics/management, law (BA or first state examination), political science, sociology), history or cultural anthropology. Students explore East Asia’s present and past from the combined perspectives of a variety of disciplines. They develop their methodological and theoretical skills particularly in the fields of history, law, management and political sciences, while also enhancing their proficiency in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese or Korean. In their third semester, students follow one of three possible ’study tracks.‘ The Research Track prepares students for future academic work and is taught entirely in Frankfurt, whilst for the Language Track and the Professional Track students spend time in one of the East Asian countries covered by the programme, either studying at an East Asian university or completing an internship. MEAS students benefit from the vibrant East-Asia-related research activities and events at Goethe University.

The application deadline for the winter semester 2026/2027 is 15 August 2026. If applicants need a visa, we strongly recommend applying by 15 July at the very latest. For more information on the programme and admission requirements, please see our website (http://meas.uni-frankfurt.de) or contact the programme coordinator (m.troester[at]em.uni- frankfurt.de).

asienforschung.de/digest/information-sessions-and-call-for-applications-for-the-ma-programme-modern-east-asian-studies-meas-at-goethe-university-frankfurt

Law on the Margins of Empire: Pluralism and Politics in Colonial Peripheries

Venue: Trinity College, University of Cambridge, CB2 1TQ, United Kingdom (in-person/virtually)

Date: 19–20 March 2027

Description: Historians have long turned to purportedly “peripheral” places to track the making of colonial law. From accounts of “small wars” to reflections on oceanic commerce, subaltern actors, and “dead-end scandals,” scholars have illuminated how law looked and acted differently from the deck of a dhow or a colonial officer’s field-tent. In these narratives, law emerges from negotiations across jurisdictional divides, both within the state and beyond.

Building on these insights, this workshop asks what constituted law and legal change on the geographic, temporal, epistemic, economic, social, and religious margins of early-modern and modern empires, both European and otherwise. It primarily seeks to explore whether and how the expansion of these empires failed to subsume or subordinate many of the institutional practices of Asian, African, and other indigenous actors. These actors continued to operate alongside and against imperial projects, shaping local and global politics, economic networks, and (trans)imperial reforms. Moving beyond traditional scholarly binaries, including colonial/indigenous, terrestrial/oceanic, religious/secular, and positive/customary, the workshop seeks to develop new conceptual paradigms that better accommodate (trans)local practices. It thereby questions popular assumptions about the consolidation of law in colonial spaces and encourages investigations into multidirectional processes of change and multifaceted legal landscapes.

The workshop focuses on Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania. The historiography of law and empire looks different in each of these places. In part, this is due to a chronological disconnect: imperial expansion (and decolonization) occurred earlier in Latin America and Asia than in Africa and Oceania. But the contours of these diverse literatures are also influenced by their source bases, the different colonial powers at play, and the regions’ heterogeneous social, religious, and cultural landscapes. This workshop offers a unique opportunity for scholars across these fields to speak to one another about the differences, convergencies, and new ways of thinking about law and empire.

We are delighted that Professor Thomas Duve (Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory) and Professor Fahad Ahmad Bishara (University of Virginia) will give keynote addresses at the event.

This is an open call for papers. We invite contributions from scholars at all career stages that interpret “law” and “margins” in the broadest possible sense, and we encourage work that challenges the traditional definitions and uses of these terms. We welcome comparative, transregional, and oceanic approaches as well as projects that focus on individual locales. Paper proposals might address one or more of the following questions:

What did “law” look like in “peripheral,” “marginal,” or “backwater” regions of empires?

How do we understand the legal vernaculars of indigenous actors vis-à-vis their encounters with colonial law?

Did subaltern practitioners speak and invoke specific languages of law? What methods (historical or otherwise) can we adopt to accommodate them?

How does looking at the margins of empires alter our views of the consolidation and despotism of imperial law?

Was colonial reform limited, defeated, or defied by “customs” in the margins?

How did diverse historical actors respond to strategies deployed by colonial powers to manage “legal pluralism” across time and geography?

Did the discourse and practice of law in the margins contradict one another? If so, how did quotidian practices push the discursive boundaries of law to provoke innovations in legal and/or political thought? Are there particular moments when these contradictions became especially visible?

How does comparing the colonial peripheries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania reformulate scholarly theorizations of law and empire?

Funding:

Thanks to the generous support of Trinity College, Cambridge, limited funds are available to reimburse travel expenses. Scholars at any career stage may request reimbursement; however, priority will be given to those based at institutions outside Europe and North America, advanced Ph.D. students, postdocs, and non-tenure-track faculty. Accommodation and meals will be provided for all participants. Unfortunately, we cannot reimburse visa expenses or provide guidance on visa applications.

Publication:

We intend to publish a selection of the workshop papers as a journal special issue. Please do not propose papers promised for publication, under review, or already published elsewhere.

Application Instructions:

Please submit the following to lawonthemargins2027[at]gmail.com by 10 August 2026 in a single PDF or Word document:

Short bio (50-150 words);

A brief statement indicating whether you would prefer to attend in-person or virtually.

A brief statement indicating if you would require reimbursement for travel costs and, if yes, an estimate of those expenses.

Decisions will be communicated by 1 October 2026. Participants will be asked to circulate short papers (4,000-6,000 words, including notes) by 1 March 2027.
