Der deutsche Beitrag zur internationalen Indonesistik in den 1990er-Jahren: ein Blick auf die Repräsentation in Excerpta IndonesicaArndt Graf

ASIEN – Nr. 86 (2003) pp. 20–31

This article reviews quantitative aspects of international Indonesian Studies, as represented in the periodical Excerpta Indonesica. A special emphasis is placed on the role of contributions in journals and readers that appear in Germany. The findings suggest that in general the center of international Indonesian Studies might have shifted from Europe, and especially from the Netherlands, to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, it seems that in the 1990s, the US only contributes about 10% of the world output. France, Switzerland, and Germany, on the other hand, seem to be relatively active in publishing Indonesianist contributions. In this context, the case of Germany is further examined. The result is that in Germany collective volumes like conference readers play the greatest role in Indonesian studies publications. There is no single journal in Germany that exerts a central role in Indonesianist publications.
