This article discusses how the Chinese writer Feng Jicai deals with China’s recent past, specifically the Cultural Revolution, and considers motives, modi and the significance of such a coming to terms with the past (Vergangenheitsbewältigung). A short biography of Feng Jicai is followed by a summary of statements from Feng’s earlier writings on the subject of the Cultural Revolution. The main section of the study introduces and analyzes the collection of interviews „Yi bai ge ren de shinian“ (English title „Voices from the Whirlwind“). The author explains why this book is important for China’s continuing Vergangenheitsbewältigung.
