The article analyses the elements of „Economic Reforms with a Human Face“ in India initiated in 1991 by then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Manmohan Singh. Meanwhile India has become the sixth largest industrial economy in the world. Since June 1996 with the government of United Front pace of economic liberalisation has been strengthened in almost all sectors. The reforms however are not without problems and critics. Indian economy is still confronted with a high-cost inefficient public sector, half-hearted land reforms, bureaucracy, and low investments in education, health and other social sectors. India’s performance until now has been below its potentials. Thus India is still far away from becoming a new Asian Tiger. May be its democratic set-up does not allow to take radical steps specially in landreform, public sector and investment policy.

Schließlich ist die Wirtschaft kein Selbstzweck. Die Wirtschaft ist dazu da, die Lebensbedingungen der Menschen zu verbessern. Und es gibt noch andere Dimensionen für das menschliche Wohlbefinden als nur die Verfügung über Güter. Wachstum ist wichtig, aber wenn es nur dadurch erreicht wird, daß man Menschenwürde und Freiheit unterdrückt, dann ist es das nicht wert.
