Analysis of the 7th general elections in Malaysia on 2nd and 3rd August 1986. MCA (Malaysian Chinese Association) – the great loser in the elections. Substantial gains for the UMNO (United Malay National Organisation). Accusations of „communal“ voting behaviour levelled at the Chinese for electing the DAP (Democratic Action Party). The author thinks that while the election results go a long way to retain or restore confidence in the stability and moderation of the country in the middle of a recession, on the ethnic front there have been some disturbing signs.
