The annual meeting of the Arbeitskreis Sozialwissenschaftliche Chinaforschung (ASC) was held on November 27–28, 2025, at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in Berlin. This year’s conference brought together scholars to present and discuss diverse research on contemporary China, including investigations into party-state capitalism, digital governance in the gaming sector, and the evolution of moral governance and scientific literacy. Against the backdrop of China’s shifting domestic and global influence, the panels provided a critical platform for analysing the country’s political economy, governance structures, and contentious politics.
A featured roundtable discussion, “China Studies & Policy Impact,” explored the practical intersection of academia and governance. This dialogue featured representatives from the Federal Foreign Office, research institutes such as GIGA and MERICS, and German universities, who debated the role of China-focused research in shaping informed policy decisions. These exchanges highlighted the necessity of rigorous scholarly engagement in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment, while underscoring the ASC’s ongoing commitment to fostering meaningful intellectual and professional exchange.
