CfP: ASC Annual Conference 20264.4.2026 {en}

The Association for Social Science Research on China (ASC) – a sub-organization of the German Association for Asian Studies (DGA) – will hold its annual conference in line with previous practices on Thursday C Friday, November 26-27, 2026, at Julius-Maximilians- University Würzburg. With this call for submissions, we are aiming at a program of 4-5 panels (2-3 papers each) and one or two roundtables. In addition, the program will also comprise the annual members’ meeting.

For a lively and engaging conference, we are soliciting individual papers from all across the social sciences and relating to a variety of topics in Chinese studies. There is no dedicated theme to the conference, but the organizers will group the papers into thematic panels as they see fit. Please submit your proposals to bjoern.alpermann[at]uni- wuerzburg.de by May 4, 2026.

Submission specifics: Abstracts for individual papers should be up to 300 words long. Please be sure to include information on your research question, theoretical/conceptual approach, research design, data and methods.

Besides individual papers, ASC members may also submit proposals for roundtable discussions or “start-up” panels to discuss participants’ early-stage research projects. Abstracts in this rubric should be up to 400 words long, specifying the overall theme as well as the topics of individual participants’ contributions, roles and affiliations.

Selection Procedure: A selection committee will screen all proposals and decide on paper acceptance by 15 June 2025. Selected proposals for individual papers will be bundled together by topic. Discussants for each individual paper will be invited from among ASC members in due course before the November conference.

Submission of full papers: Papers will be due on Monday, 2 November 2026 via e-mail to bjoern.alpermann[at]uni-wuerzburg.de

Please note: ASC annual conference are based on a well-established modus operandi that prioritizes in-depth discussions of a relatively small number of papers (~45 min per paper). In line with previous ASC meetings, in lieu of presentations by paper authors, discussant(s) will provide a concise (~10 min) commentary before opening the floor for intensive group discussion of the papers. For this modus operandi to work out productively, it is key that participants receive the papers well ahead of the event to read them and prepare substantive feedback in good time.
