Call for Papers

As part of the INCSA 2026 conference, INCSA, in collaboration with the Japan Hub of the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies International (CNCSI-Japan) and the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido University, invites proposals for the Japan Satellite. We welcome submissions for individual papers and panels that explore the nineteenth century from interdisciplinary, international, and intertemporal perspectives.

Conference Theme

This satellite conference aims to contribute to the broader INCSA 2026 theme—Revolution, Revelation, Reconciliation—by approaching these questions from East Asian perspectives. By foregrounding the region’s distinctive historical formations, the conference explores how locally grounded analyses can open broader conversations in global contexts.

In particular, we invite papers that reconsider the nineteenth century as a historical framework and its legacies in East Asia, thereby examining survival strategies within a shifting world order. We welcome proposals from a wide range of fields and institutional settings, including universities, museums, libraries, archives, historical societies, theatres and music venues, and newsrooms.

Possible Topics

We welcome intertemporal, interdisciplinary, and international approaches to one (or both) of

the following themes:

  • Rethinking the nineteenth century as an imperial/colonial temporal and geographical framework
  • Problems of nineteenth-century legacies in East Asia and survival strategies within a shifting
  • world order
