ince the end of the Suharto regime Indonesia has been struck by religious motivated violence. Clashes between Muslims and Christians occurred in various parts of the country, spectacular bomb attacks caused hundreds of deads and fundamentalist groups demanded the introduction of the šarĩ‛a. The radicalization of religious discourse challenges the state principle of Pancasila which defines Indonesia as a multicultural and a multireligious nation. The article examines the history of Christianity and Islam in Indonesia, the upcoming of religious organisations in the political area and the recent struggle between influential social groups who use religious arguments as a strategy of political mobilization.
