  1. Bitte lesen Sie zuerst die Allgemeinen Hinweise für Autor:innen und informieren Sie sich über die Beitragsformate/Rubriken, die in ASIEN möglich sind.
  2. Sofern Sie an einer Publikation in ASIEN interessiert sind, senden Sie uns Ihr Artikelmanuskript / Ihren Konferenzbericht bitte ausschließlich an asien@asienkunde.de.
    Bitte senden Sie uns Ihre Rezension an .
  3. Als Autor:in eines Konferenzberichts oder einer Rezension sollten Sie innerhalb von wenigen Tagen eine Eingangsbestätigung von uns erhalten.
  4. Als Autor:in eines längeren Artikels sollten Sie ebenfalls innerhalb weniger Tage eine Rückmeldung aus der Redaktion erhalten. Ihr Artikel durchläuft zunächst eine redaktionelle Vorprüfung, dann beginnt, sofern die Vorprüfung erfolgreich war, je nach Artikeltyp ein Double-blind-Begutachtungsverfahren oder eine vereinfachte, redaktionelle Begutachtung. Sie haben spätestens ab diesem Zeitpunkt eine/n direkte/n Ansprechpartner:in im Redaktionsteam.  Bitte passen Sie Ihr Manuskript unseren technischen Hinweisen für Autor:innen sowie unserem Style Guide entsprechend an.

  3. As the author of a conference report or a review, you should receive a confirmation of receipt from us within a few days.
  4. As the author of a longer article, you should also receive feedback from the editorial team within a few days. Your article will first undergo an editorial preliminary review; if this is successful, a double-blind peer review process or a simplified editorial review will then commence, depending on the type of article. From this point onwards at the latest, you will have a direct contact person within the editorial team. Allgemeinen Hinweise für Autor:innen General guidelines for authors

ARTIKEL

Forschungsaufsätze
Die erste Seite muss einen 15–20-zeiligen englischsprachigen Summary, 4–8 inhaltscharakterisierende – englische – Schlagwörter sowie kurze biografische Angaben (Name, Position, Institution sowie optional Forschungsschwerpunkt oder aktuelles Projekt) enthalten.
Die anonymisierten Artikel werden von zwei Gutachter:innen (double blind) begutachtet. Der/die Autor:in bekommt i. d. R. innerhalb von 2 Monaten Bescheid, ob und mit welcher Kritik sein/ihr Beitrag zur Veröffentlichung angenommen wurde. Für die Überarbeitung des Beitrags hat der/die Autor:in 2 Wochen Zeit. Ungefähr 4 Wochen vor Drucklegung erhält der/die Autor:in seinen/ihren Beitrag zur Korrektur. Zu prüfen ist der Beitrag auf Druckfehler, Vollständigkeit und Stellung der Abbildungen und Tabellen sowie auf eventuell von der Redaktion angemerkte Fragen. Den Umfang verändernde Verbesserungen müssen unterbleiben. (Vorlage_Artikel)

Die jeweiligen Wortangaben in der Rubrikenübersicht stellen einen Mindestumfang dar. Beiträge, die darüber hinausgehen, nehmen wir ebenfalls gerne zur Veröffentlichung an.

ARTICLES

Research Article
The first page must include a 15–20-line summary in English, 4–8 keywords in English that characterise the content, and brief biographical details (name, position, institution, and, optionally, research focus or current project).
The anonymised articles are reviewed by two referees (double-blind). The author is usually notified within two months as to whether their contribution has been accepted for publication and, if so, with what comments. The author has two weeks to revise the contribution. Approximately four weeks before going to press, the author will receive their contribution for proofreading. The contribution must be checked for typographical errors, completeness and the positioning of figures and tables, as well as any queries raised by the editorial team. No changes that alter the length of the contribution are permitted.

The word counts listed in the category overview represent a minimum requirement. We are also happy to accept submissions that exceed this limit for publication.

Forschungsaufsätze

  • Profil und Ziel: Forschungsaufsätze sind klassische wissenschaftliche Beiträge, die neue Erkenntnisse zur Asienforschung präsentieren und im fachwissenschaftlichen Diskurs verortet sind. Sie richten sich an Autor:innen, die ihre Forschung in einem etablierten Zeitschriftenformat sichtbar machen möchten
  • Typische Inhalte: empirisch fundierte Studien (qualitativ, quantitativ, historisch, philologisch etc.), u.a. theoriegeleitete Analysen und konzeptionelle Beiträge, systematische Literatur- und Forschungsstandsdiskussionen mit eigenem Argument etc., offen für alle Disziplinen/Zugänge (auch ohne Theorie/konzeptionellen Rahmen)
  • Umfang und Begutachtung:
    • Double-blind peer-reviewed: mind. 6.000–8.000 Wörter
    • Redaktionell begutachtet: mind. 4.000–6.000 Wörter
    • (jeweils inkl. Fußnoten/Endnoten, exkl. Literaturverzeichnis nach Bedarf)
  • Abgrenzung: Im Unterschied zu den Rubriken Werkstattberichte und Projektforum stehen hier ausgearbeitete Argumente und belastbare Ergebnisse im Zentrum

Research Article

  • Profile and aim: Research articles are traditional academic contributions that present new findings in Asian studies and are situated within the academic discourse. They are aimed at authors who wish to publish their research in an established journal format
  • Typical content: empirically grounded studies (qualitative, quantitative, historical, philological, etc.), including theory-driven analyses and conceptual contributions, systematic discussions of the literature and current state of research with original arguments, etc.; open to all disciplines and approaches (including those without a theoretical or conceptual framework)
  • Length and review process:
    • Double-blind peer-reviewed: Min. 6,000–8,000 words
    • Editorially reviewed: Min. 4,000–6,000 words
    • (including footnotes/endnotes in each case, excluding bibliography where applicable)
  • Distinction: Unlike the ‘Field & Practice’ and ‘Research & Project Notes’ sections, the focus here is on fully developed arguments and robust findings

Werkstattberichte

  • Profil und Ziel: Werkstattberichte bieten reflektierte Einblicke in Forschungsprozesse: ins Feld, in Archive, in Datenerhebung und -auswertung, in methodische Entscheidungen und in die organisatorische Realität wissenschaftlicher Arbeit. Im Mittelpunkt steht Erkenntnisgewinn durch Erfahrung inkl. Umwegen, Problemen und Lösungen
  • Typische Inhalte: Feldreflexionen, Schlüsselszenen, Zugangshürden, Gatekeeping; methodische Herausforderungen (Interviewführung, Sampling, Übersetzung, digitale Methoden, Mixed Methods); Daten- und Materialarbeit (Archive, Dokumente, Plattformdaten, visuelle Materialien); Forschungspraxis (Kooperationen, Genehmigungen, Sicherheit, Ethik, Finanzierung); Reise- und Exkursionsbericht

Field & Practice

  • Profile and aim: Field & Practice reports offer reflective insights into research processes: into the field, into archives, into data collection and analysis, into methodological decisions, and into the organisational realities of academic work. The focus is on gaining knowledge through experience, including detours, problems and solutions
  • Typical content: field reflections, key scenes, barriers to access, gatekeeping; methodological challenges (interviewing, sampling, translation, digital methods, mixed methods); data and material work (archives, documents, platform data, visual materials); research practice (collaborations, permissions, safety, ethics, funding); travel and field trip report
    • Analytical and reflective, easy to read, with minimal but citable references (literature/examples where necessary)
    • Including ‘Asia Today’ (online)
  • Length and format:
    • min. 1,500–3,000 words
  • Distinction: not primarily opinion- or thesis-oriented (Essays & Perspectives), not a project presentation without a practical component (Research & Project Notes)

Debatten & Perspektiven

  • Profil und Ziel: Diese Rubrik versammelt argumentative, pointierte Beiträge zu aktuellen Entwicklungen, theoretischen Fragen oder disziplinären Debatten in der Asienforschung. Sie lädt zur Positionierung ein und fördert die Sichtbarkeit von Perspektiven, die nicht als „vollständiger Forschungsaufsatz“ angelegt sind
  • Typische Inhalte: Essays zu gesellschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungen mit analytischer Einordnung; konzeptionelle Impulse, begriffliche Klärungen, theoretische Interventionen; Repliken und Reaktionen auf veröffentlichte Beiträge oder Debatten im Feld; Einordnungen aktueller Forschungstrends
    • Essayistisch, gut lesbar, klare Argumentationslinie; reduzierter Apparat (Quellen dort, wo sie tragen)

Essays & Perspectives

  • Profile and aim: This section brings together well-argued, incisive contributions on current developments, theoretical questions or disciplinary debates in Asian studies. It encourages authors to take a stance and promotes the visibility of perspectives that are not structured as ‘full-length research articles’
  • Typical content: Essays on social and political developments with analytical context; conceptual ideas, clarifications of terminology, theoretical interventions; responses and reactions to published articles or debates in the field; contextualisation of current research trends
    • Essayistic style, easy to read, clear line of argument; minimal apparatus (sources cited where relevant)
  • Length and format:
    • min. 2,000–4,000 words
  • Distinction: not primarily research-practical (field & practice), not project-presenting (Research & Project Notes); not primarily transfer/recommendation-oriented (Policy & Practice Briefs)

Projektforum

  • Profil und Ziel: Das Projektforum stellt laufende oder geplante Forschungsprojekte vor (Dissertationen, Drittmittelprojekte, Pilotstudien, Forschungsseminare). Es dient der Vernetzung, der frühen Sichtbarkeit und dem fachlichen Austausch, besonders auch für Nachwuchsforschende
  • Typische Inhalte: Dissertations- und Postdoc-Projekte, Projektanträge, Pilotstudien; Masterarbeiten (als komprimierte, allgemein verständliche Zusammenfassung); Vorhaben mit offenen Fragen oder methodischen Entscheidungen, zu denen Rückmeldung gewünscht ist
  • Umfang und empfohlene Struktur:
    • mind. 1.200–2.000 Wörter
    • Empfohlen: Fragestellung, Relevanz, Stand der Forschung, (methodischer) Zugang, Arbeitsstand, offene Fragen/Feedbackbedarf, Optional (digital): Projektskizzen zur Partnersuche / Kooperation.
  • Abgrenzung: Keine ausgearbeiteten Ergebnisse und keine ausführliche Theoriearbeit (Forschungsaufsätze), Fokus liegt auf Projektlogik und Arbeitsstand, nicht auf fertiger Argumentation/Ergebnissen

Research & Project Notes

  • Profile and aim: The Research & Project Notes presents ongoing or planned research projects (doctoral theses, externally funded projects, pilot studies, research seminars). It serves to facilitate networking, early visibility and academic exchange, particularly for early-career researchers
  • Typical content: doctoral and postdoctoral projects, project proposals, pilot studies; Master’s theses (as a concise, generally understandable summary); projects with open questions or methodological decisions on which feedback is sought
  • Length and recommended structure:
    • min. 1,200–2,000 words
    • Recommended: Research question, relevance, state of the art, (methodological) approach, progress to date, open questions/need for feedback; Optional (digital): project outlines for finding partners/collaboration.
  • Distinction: No detailed results and no extensive theoretical work (research articles); the focus is on project logic and progress to date, not on final arguments or results

Lehre & Didaktik

  • Profil und Ziel: Die Rubrik Lehre & Didaktik versammelt Beiträge zur Hochschullehre in der Asienforschung und angrenzenden Disziplinen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen didaktische Konzepte, innovative Lehrformate, curriculare Entwicklungen und reflektierte Praxiserfahrungen. Ziel ist es, erprobte Modelle sichtbar zu machen, Austausch über Lehrstrategien zu fördern und Impulse für die Weiterentwicklung von Studium und Lehre zu geben.
  • Typische Inhalte: Konzeption und Evaluation von Lehrveranstaltungen (Seminare, Vorlesungen, Projektkurse); Forschendes Lernen, Exkursionen, digitale Lehrformate, Blended Learning; Internationalisierung und Kooperationen mit Partnerinstitutionen in Asien; Umgang mit sensiblen Themen im Seminar (Politik, Religion, Konflikte); Prüfungsformate, Kompetenzorientierung, Curriculumentwicklung; Lehrmaterialien, Quellenarbeit, Einsatz digitaler Tools

Teaching & Learning

  • Profile and aim: The ‘Teaching & Learning’ section brings together articles on higher education teaching in Asian studies and related disciplines. The focus is on didactic concepts, innovative teaching formats, curriculum developments and reflective practical experiences. The aim is to highlight tried-and-tested models, promote discussion on teaching strategies, and provide impetus for the further development of study programmes and teaching.
  • Typical content: Design and evaluation of courses (seminars, lectures, project-based courses); research-based learning, field trips, digital teaching formats, blended learning; internationalisation and collaborations with partner institutions in Asia; dealing with sensitive topics in seminars (politics, religion, conflicts); Examination formats, competence-based teaching, curriculum development; teaching materials, source-based work, use of digital tools
  • Length and structure:
    • min. 1,500–3,000 words
    • Structured, practice-oriented and analytically reflective; brief contextualisation (e.g. degree programme, target group, learning objectives) is desirable. Evaluative elements (experiences, feedback, learning outcomes) enhance clarity.
  • Distinction: Not primarily research-practical or methodological, but teaching-related; not a project proposal in the sense of a research design; and not primarily transfer- or policy-oriented

Praxis & Politik

  • Profil und Ziel: Praxis & Politik bietet evidenzbasierte, klar strukturierte Beiträge, die Forschungserkenntnisse für Politik, Medien, Bildung, Verwaltung oder Zivilgesellschaft aufbereiten. Die Rubrik stärkt den Transfer und zeigt die Relevanz der Asienforschung außerhalb von Wissenschaft/Forschung
  • Typische Inhalte: Policy- oder Praxisbriefings mit Hintergrund, Einordnung und Konsequenzen; strukturierte Übersichten (Problem – Befundlage – Optionen – Empfehlungen); Fallbeispiele und „Lessons Learned“ aus Kooperationen, Projekten, Beratung, Bildungsarbeit

  • Profile and aim: ‘Policy & Practice Briefs’ offers evidence-based, clearly structured articles that present research findings in a way that is accessible to policymakers, the media, the education sector, public administration and civil society. The section promotes knowledge transfer and highlights the relevance of Asian studies beyond academia and research
  • Typical content: Policy or practice briefings with background, context and implications; structured overviews (problem – findings – options – recommendations); case studies and ‘lessons learnt’ from collaborations, projects, consultancy and educational work
    • Concise, clearly structured, key messages highlighted (e.g. bullet points possible), recommendations for action where appropriate
  • Length and format: Min.1,000–2,500 words
  • Distinction: not opinion-driven or primarily prescriptive (debates & perspectives); not methodologically reflective based on research practice (workshop reports/ Field & Practice)

Forum & Gespräch

  • Profil und Ziel: Forum & Gespräch bündelt dialogische und personenbezogene Formate, die die Fachcommunity sichtbarer machen und Austausch ermöglichen: über Forschung, Berufswege, Kooperationen, kontroverse Fragen oder neue Themenfelder
  • Formate und Umfang:
    • Interview: mind. 800–1.500 Wörter
    • Fachgespräch/Zwiegespräch: mind. 1.500–3.000 Wörter

Voices & Dialogues

  • Profile and aim: Voices & Dialogues brings together dialogue-based and personal formats that raise the profile of the specialist community and facilitate discussion: on research, career paths, collaborations, controversial issues or new areas of interest
  • Formats and length:
    • Interview: min. 800–1,500 words
    • Expert discussion/dialogue: min. 1,500–3,000 words
    • Multi-voiced debate: 3–5 short contributions, min. 600–800 words
    • Dialogic, accessible, community-oriented; academically informative without an essay format
  • Distinction: Not primarily an analytical individual contribution (Essays & Perspectives), but rather a format for exchange and networking

Visuelle Analysen

  • Profil und Ziel: Visuelle Analysen versammeln multimodale Beiträge, in denen Fotos, Karten, Diagramme oder Datenvisualisierungen analytisch erschlossen werden. Im Zentrum steht ein klarer Befund oder eine Fragestellung, die über visuelles Material entwickelt wird mit einem verständlichen Begleittext
  • Typische Inhalte: Fotofeldnotizen und bildgestützte Beobachtungen; Kartografien und Mapping (GIS, historische Karten, Raumbezüge); Datenvisualisierungen und „Mini Data Stories“; digitale Mini-Studien (z. B. Plattformbeobachtungen, Visualisierungen von Diskursen); kuratierte Bildserien mit analytischer Rahmung (keine reine Fotostrecke)
  • Umfang und Format:
    • mind. 800–1.800 Wörter + Abbildungen

Visual & Digital Analyses

  • Profile and objective: Visual & Digital Analyses bring together multimodal contributions in which photographs, maps, diagrams or data visualisations are analysed. The focus is on a clear finding or a research question that is developed through visual material, accompanied by an accessible explanatory text
  • Typical content: Photographic field notes and image-based observations; cartographies and mapping (GIS, historical maps, spatial references); data visualisations and ‘mini data stories’; digital mini-studies (e.g. platform observations, visualisations of discourses); curated image series with an analytical framework (not merely a photo gallery)
  • Length and format:
    • 800–1,800 words + illustrations
    • A short analytical text that makes the material, context, method/source and interpretation comprehensible; image/graphic captions and references are essential
  • Distinction: Not merely an illustration accompanying a text, but material at the heart of the argument. Not primarily a methodological report on experience (Field & Practice)

Konferenzberichte

  • Profil und Ziel: Konferenzberichte geben strukturierte Einblicke in relevante Tagungen, Workshops und Panels. Sie bieten nicht nur Chronologie, sondern eine analytische Einordnung: Welche Debatten wurden geführt? Welche Trends zeichnen sich ab? Welche offenen Fragen bleiben?
  • Umfang: 
    • mind. 800–1.500 Wörter
    • klare Struktur (Thema, zentrale Panels/Thesen, Einordnung, Ausblick) und prägnante Auswahl statt Vollständigkeit

Conference Proceedings

  • Profile and aim: Conference Proceedings provide structured insights into relevant conferences, workshops and panels. They offer not just a chronological account, but an analytical overview: What debates took place? What trends are emerging? What questions remain unanswered?
  • Length:
    • min. 800–1,500 words
    • Clear structure (topic, key panels/theses, analysis, outlook) and a concise selection rather than a comprehensive account

Rezensionen

  • Profil und Ziel: Rezensionen diskutieren neue Publikationen für die Asienforschung und ordnen sie in Forschungsdebatten ein. Neben Einzelrezensionen sind Sammelrezensionen willkommen, die mehrere Titel zu einem Thema vergleichend zusammenführen, essayistische Rezensionen/Aufsatz
  • Umfang und Format:
    • Einzelrezension: mind. 800–1.200 Wörter, Sammelrezension: mind. 1.500–2.500 Wörter
    • Informativ, kritisch, fair; klare Aussage zu Beitrag, Stärken/Schwächen und Zielgruppenrelevanz

Reviews

  • Profile and aim: Reviews discuss new publications in the field of Asian studies and situate them within research debates. In addition to individual reviews, we welcome collective reviews that bring together several titles on a single topic for comparative analysis, as well as essayistic reviews/essays
  • Length and format:
    • Single review: min. 800–1,200 words; collective review: min. 1,500–2,500 words
    • Informative, critical, fair; clear assessment of the work, its strengths and weaknesses, and its relevance to the target audience

Technische Hinweise für ASIEN-Autor:innen Technical guidelines for ASIEN-authors

Spätestens, nachdem Sie von der Redaktion eine Publikationszusage erhalten haben, bereiten Sie Ihr Manuskript bitte nach dieser Anleitung auf:

Textstrukturierung / Formatierung

  • Artikel: Bitte gliedern Sie Ihr Manuskript mit den folgenden Formatvorlagen (Word-Standards; in anderen Textverarbeitungsprogrammen können die Bezeichnungen abweichen):
    • Überschrift 1 für den Titel
    • Überschrift 2–Überschrift 4 (nicht nummeriert) für Ihre maximal drei Überschriftenebenen
    • Standard für normale Absätze
    • Zitat für Zitatblöcke
    • Fußnotentext für Fußnotentext

    (Es spielt dabei keine Rolle, wie diese Formatvorlagen in Ihrer Datei aussehen.)
    Kurze Beitragsarten (Rezensionen, Konferenzberichte) haben keine Gliederung (Unter-Überschriften), keine Fußnoten, kein Literaturverzeichnis; bitte verwenden Sie nur die Standard-Formatvorlage.

  • Keine Silbentrennung: Schalten Sie die automatische Silbentrennung aus und setzen Sie auf keinen Fall manuelle oder halbmanuelle Trennungen ein.
  • Bitte verwenden Sie keine leeren Absätze als Abstandhalter und keine Leerzeichen oder Tabsprünge zum Einrücken; setzen Sie keine Seiten- oder Abschnittsumbrüche ein.
  • Abgesehen von der Verwendung der genannten Formatvorlagen: Überlassen Sie das Layout Ihres Textes bitte uns.

Grafiken und Tabellen

  • Bitte denken Sie daran, dass ASIEN im DIN-A5-Format erscheint. Das bedeutet: Tabellen und Bilder sind im Endformat maximal 12 cm breit. Grafiken und Diagramme müssen in dieser Größe noch lesbar sein, Tabellen dürfen nicht zuviele Spalten haben. Die genauen Tabellen-Spezifikationen finden Sie im style guide.
  • Abbildungen dürfen farbig oder in Graustufen sein. Farbige Fotos, Grafiken und Diagramme müssen sowohl in Farbe (PDF-und Online-Version) als auch in Graustufen (Print und E-Book-Reader) funktionieren.
  • Fotos bitte als unkomprimierte JPG/JPEGs abliefern; Grafiken als PNG oder SVG, notfalls als unkomprimierte JPG/JPEGs. Komprimierte JPG/JPEGs können wir nicht verwenden.

Once you have received confirmation of publication from the editorial team, please format your manuscript in accordance with these guidelines:

Text structure / formatting

  • Articles: Please structure your manuscript using the following style templates (Word standards; the names may differ in other word processing programmes):
    • Heading 1 for the title
    • Heading 2–Heading 4 (unnumbered) for your maximum of three heading levels
    • Standard for normal paragraphs
    • Quote for quoted blocks
    • Footnote text for footnote text

(It does not matter what these style sheets look like in your file.)
Short article types (reviews, conference reports) have no structure (subheadings), no footnotes and no bibliography; please use only the Standard style sheet.

  • No hyphenation: Disable automatic hyphenation and under no circumstances use manual or semi-manual hyphenation.
  • Please do not use empty paragraphs as spacers, nor spaces or tabs for indentation; do not insert page or section breaks.
  • Apart from using the specified style sheets: please leave the layout of your text to us.

Graphs and tables

  • Please bear in mind that ASIEN is published in DIN A5 format. This means that tables and images must not exceed 12 cm in width in their final format. Graphs and diagrams must remain legible at this size, and tables must not have too many columns. You will find the exact table specifications in the style guide.
  • Images may be in colour or greyscale. Colour photographs, graphics and diagrams must work in both colour (PDF and online versions) and greyscale (print and e-book readers).
  • Please submit photographs as uncompressed JPG/JPEGs; graphics as PNG or SVG, or as uncompressed JPG/JPEGs if necessary. We cannot use compressed JPG/JPEGs.
  • All photos and graphics must be submitted separately, even if they are embedded in the manuscript. Resolution must be at least 1500 px in width (e.g. 1.8 megapixels for a 4:3 format), and higher is welcome.
