The Islamic Parties have surprisingly emerged from Pakistan’s elections in October 2002 as the country’s third political force. For the first time in Pakistan’s history they had united on a common electoral platform putting aside their political and ideological differences, having in the aftermath of September 11th increasingly come under pressure. Their electoral success is mainly due to a radical anti-American strategy and a clever instrumentalisation of pashton nationalism. But their electoral campaign also reflects a pragmatic approach. They seem to have realised that only a non-ideological policy will enable them to enlarge their traditional vote bank…
