The issues of unity, stability, continuity and change favoured Congress (I) under Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership. The reemergence of a „dominant party system“. A new role acquired by regional opposition parties in the dispersal of political power. The Congress (I) has to operate now in a political context which is characterized by more diversified opposition forces.
