Neoconservatism seems to have become a mainstream in Chinese politicial thinking since the early 90s. It can be heuristically divided into political and cultural (intellectual) neoconservatism, both of them aiming at a new legitimatization of political authority in present-day China. Neoconservatism is as much a consequence of the eroding ideological power basis of the Communist Party as a reaction of China’s intellectuals to postmodern theory. Closely connected to the new trend of nationalist thinking in China, it’s theoretical influence even on the so-called liberal camp should not be underestimated.
