This symposium will explore the complex cultural, historical and political interactions among the Republic of China, the People’s Republic of China and the United States with a view to maintaining de facto peace and defending human rights on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
The programme will begin with in-person check-in at 8:30, followed by welcoming remarks at 8:45. Presentations will take place from 9:00 to 12:00 with the following speakers: Evan Dawley (Goucher College), Peace through Understanding?: A Survey of Taiwan’s Historical Trajectories; Sulmaan Wasif Khan (Fletcher School, Tufts University), The Taiwan Tangle; Richard C. Bush (Brookings Institution), Why and How Taiwan Became an Issue in U.S. Relations with China; Sara A. Newland (Smith College), Taiwan’s Domestic Politics: Views on U.S.-China-Taiwan Relations.
After a lunch break from 12:00 to 1:00, afternoon presentations will run from 1:00 to 4:00 with Brian C. H. Fong (National Sun Yat-sen University), What’s Driving the U.S. and China to Compete—and Possibly Fight—in Taiwan; Michael D. Swaine (Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft), Strategic Ambiguity is the Only Option for Peace and Security in the Taiwan Strait; Jennifer Kavanagh (Defense Priorities), Staying Out: A Strategy for Recalibrating U.S. Support for Taiwan; Tong Zhao (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace), The Risk of Nuclear Escalation and Humanitarian Crisis in a Taiwan Conflict. The symposium will conclude with closing remarks at 4:00.
