MEAS, an international, interdisciplinary and research-oriented graduate programme, is an English-taught degree primarily designed for students who hold a BA degree in either East Asia-related humanities or the social sciences (economics/management, law (BA or first state examination), political science, sociology), history or cultural anthropology. Students explore East Asia’s present and past from the combined perspectives of a variety of disciplines. They develop their methodological and theoretical skills particularly in the fields of history, law, management and political sciences, while also enhancing their proficiency in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese or Korean. In their third semester, students follow one of three possible ’study tracks.‘ The Research Track prepares students for future academic work and is taught entirely in Frankfurt, whilst for the Language Track and the Professional Track students spend time in one of the East Asian countries covered by the programme, either studying at an East Asian university or completing an internship. MEAS students benefit from the vibrant East-Asia-related research activities and events at Goethe University.
The application deadline for the winter semester 2026/2027 is 15 August 2026. If applicants need a visa, we strongly recommend applying by 15 July at the very latest.
