Call for Applications for a Senior Academic Position at the Zvi Yavetz School of History and Regional Studies at Tel Aviv University Department of East Asian Studies
The Zvi Yavetz School of History and Regional Studies and the Department of East Asian Studies at Tel Aviv University invite applications for a tenure-track position. The position is open to outstanding researchers specializing in Japan and/or Korea covering subjects such as culture, society, history, social policy, politics, international relations, popular culture and urban culture.
The position is open to candidates who hold a PhD degree or who will be eligible to receive the degree before the start date of the appointment (October 2026).
Position Requirements:
- Excellence in research and a wide orientation in the fields of Japanese and/or Korean Studies
- Experience in teaching academic level classes.
- The position’s responsibilities include teaching introductory and advanced courses, advising graduate theses, and participating in departmental activities.
- Ability to teach courses in Hebrew within three years of appointment.
- Competence in Japanese/Korean language is necessary.
- Professional and/or scholarly experience in Japan/Korea are assets.
- Commitment to the supervision of research students.
- Commitment to seeking research funding, both locally and internationally.
- Active contribution to the academic community within and beyond the department.
This is a tenure-track position, which may lead to a tenured appointment following the probationary period. Salary and conditions will conform to Tel Aviv University regulations. Appointment procedures will be carried out in accordance with the rules and regulations of Tel Aviv University and are subject to the approval of the university authorities.
Start Date: October 2026, pending university approval, which will be communicated to the selected candidate upon appointment.
Candidates are invited to submit the following materials (as PDF files):
- A cover letter outlining academic background and research interests, teaching and administrative experience (up to 2 pages).
- An explanation of interest in being at Tel Aviv University and living in Israel.
- A detailed curriculum vitae.
- Two writing samples (peer-reviewed journal articles or book chapters, and/or PhD dissertation chapters).
- A concise statement of future research and teaching plans (up to two pages).
- A list of up to six proposed courses, within them two detailed syllabi, one of a general BA introductory lecture course, and one of a graduate seminar on a topic within the applicant’s research expertise.

Candidates who advance to the second stage of evaluation will be asked to provide three letters of recommendation from senior scholars to be sent on short notice directly to the email address above (at least two of them from universities abroad). Shortlisted candidates will be invited to in-person interviews on campus in June and will be asked to deliver a talk to committee members, faculty, and students.
The position is open to all candidates. The appointment will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and the School of History and Regional Studies’ needs. The Faculty of Humanities, and Tel Aviv University are not obligated to appoint any of the candidates who apply for this position. The School of History and Regional Studies reserves the right to independently seek additional candidates for consideration.
