Postdoctoral Fellowships in Global Asia Studies, 2027–2029
Center for Global Asia, NYU Shanghai
The Center for Global Asia (CGA) at NYU Shanghai invites applications for 2–3 Postdoctoral Fellowships in Global Asia Studies, pending budgetary approval.
The Center has recently been awarded a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to establish a Global Asia Hub in Shanghai. This initiative aims to advance collaborative research, capacity-building, and curricular development in the emerging field of Global Asia Studies. As part of this project, CGA seeks applicants whose research engages with one or more of the following thematic areas:
- Asian Migration and Diaspora
- Environment and Climate
- Transregional Connections and Circulations
- Comparative Urbanisms and Political Ideologies
Applicants should propose projects that adopt connective and/or comparative approaches within the framework of Global Asia. Research must engage at least two regions within Asia, or one region of Asia in relation to another part of the world. The research statement should clearly articulate how the proposed project contributes to the conceptual and methodological development of Global Asia Studies.
In addition to pursuing their own research under the guidance of a designated faculty mentor, selected fellows will be expected to participate actively in the Center’s Luce-funded initiatives, contributing to collaborative research activities, capacity-building programs, and curricular development efforts.
Appointments are for up to two years, contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Applicants must have received their PhD no earlier than 2023. Candidates who expect to complete all requirements for the PhD in 2026 are also eligible to apply, provided that the degree has been formally awarded before the start of the appointment.
Application Requirements
Applicants should submit the following materials:
- Cover letter
- Curriculum vitae
- Research statement (maximum three pages + one page bibliography)
- Two letters of recommendation
Application Deadline: 15 August 2026

About the Center for Global Asia at NYU Shanghai
The Center for Global Asia at NYU Shanghai serves as the hub within the NYU Global Network University for promoting the study of Asia—both historical and contemporary—within a global framework. The Center’s overall objective is to illuminate the contexts behind the historical and reemerging connections among the regions of Asia and between Asia and the wider world. This includes examining how Asian polities and societies have interacted over time and are now interacting once again across many fronts. The Center recently received a Henry Luce Foundation grant to create a capacity-building hub in partnership with Asian and North American institutions.
